It’s Fire Prevention Week: Are you ready?

Fire Prevention Week has been funded by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) since 1922. This annual event is used to encourage and inform the public about the prevention of fire and fire safety. When it comes to flames, the stove or oven is one of the biggest culprits. Obviously, fire protection while cooking or baking is of the utmost importance. You can never cook or bake while you are tired or under the influence of alcohol simply because you don’t want to fall asleep if there is anything cooking on your stovetop or baking in the oven.

On the same lines, make sure that when you roast, boil or bake food, you remain in the kitchen. Although allowing the food to cook as you take care of other tasks around your house may be tempting, this is not a good idea. You need to be able to respond to this emergency quickly if the food boils over or if anything outside the pan ignites during the cooking process. (Food that is left unattended while cooking is the major cause of kitchen fires.)

This highlights the need in your kitchen for a working fire extinguisher. Make sure it is kept readily accessible somewhere, and make sure anyone who cooks or bakes in your home knows how to use it.

Through smothering the flames with a metal lid, small grease fires can be put out. As soon as possible, turn off the burner and leave the pan alone until it’s totally cold. If your oven has a small fire, turn your oven off and hold the door closed until the fire is out.
